A new free community-based event is taking place this June
For the first time in Brighton, a free community-based event is taking place in June, organised by the charities The People Who Share and The Social Society.
Taking place on Hove Lawns on Saturday 22 June, The Big Share will mark the grand finale of Global Sharing Week.
The event aims to bring the people of Brighton & Hove together to celebrate sharing culture, inclusiveness and altruism, whilst combating inequality, social isolation and climate change.
Brighton and Hove has the opportunity to become a beacon for the sharing movement given the city’s strong sharing culture. We believe the sharing movement will be central to overcoming many of our modern societal challenges. Indeed, research carried out for Generation Share, a book published for Global Sharing Week, evidences the powerful social impact of the sharing economy.Benita Matofska, founder of The People Who Share
The Big Share will take us closer to becoming a sharing city, joining the most future-facing cities around the world, and helping residents access resources they need for their everyday lives.
Amsterdam, Seoul, San Francisco and, more recently, Norwich, have already started adopting the concept of sharing in the city, as the movement gains more and more momentum.
There will be plenty of activities on offer on the day, including a kindness mob, a big beach clothes swap, a crowd sing-a-long and plenty of entertaining acts throughout the day.
The two charities behind the event are The People Who Share and The Social Society. The People Who Share is a charity that ‘provides ways to find hidden value and unleash everyone’s sharing potential,’ while The Social Society is ‘a community group that hosts events for social good, raises funds and pledges time, skills, expertise and voluntary hours to tackle local issues head on.’
The Social Society has joined forces with The People Who Share to deliver The Big Share to the city. We believe that bringing people together to share their time, skills and expertise – while having fun and enjoying themselves – builds lasting connections. Ultimately, sharing helps foster stronger and more sustainable communities.Toni Finnimore, event co-organiser
